Do Oil Price Shocks Matter for Environmental Degradation? Evidence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve in GCC Countries

چکیده
This paper aims to examine the asymmetric impact of oil price shocks on environmental degradation for a panel six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries from 1996 2016. We use dynamic seemingly unrelated regressions (DSUR) approach that considers cross-sectional dependency reveal interrelations between and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. The finding shows positive prices have statistically significant negative effect CO emissions, while did not affect More specifically, negatively influenced emissions in Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Emirates Arab. In turn, most is found Qatar Arabia. Meanwhile, effects emission Oman While other countries, it does impact. Also, results support an Kuznets curve Kuwait, Arab Emirates; contrast, hypothesis was rejected Bahrain Oman. study could help policymakers adopt renewable energy policies energy-saving technologies sustain economic development improve quality.

The Environmental Kuznets Curve:
1. Introduction The environmental Kuznets curve is a hypothesized relationship between various indicators of environmental degradation and income per capita. In the early stages of economic growth degradation and pollution increase, but beyond some level of income per capita (which will vary for different indicators) the trend reverses, so that at high-income levels economic growth leads to env...

cointegration Classical regression analysis assumes that the error term in a regression is normally and independently distributed. An extreme violation of this condition is when the error term is a random walk. Such a regression is termed a spurious regression and the results are not reliable. It usually indicates that a required variable with random walk behavior has been omitted from the mode...
متن کاملCorruption and the Environmental Kuznets Curve in Developed and Developing Countries
This study examines the relationship between per capita income and per capita dioxide emissions in the form of a new definition of the Environmental Kuznets Curve, to investigate how corruption influences the income level at the turning point of the relationship between per capita dioxide emissions and income, in developed and developing countries the period 1994-2013 through the use of a panel...
متن کاملConfronting the Environmental Kuznets Curve
T he environmental Kuznets curve posits an inverted-U relationship between pollution and economic development. Kuznets’s name was apparently attached to the curve by Grossman and Krueger (1993), who noted its resemblance to Kuznets’s inverted-U relationship between income inequality and development. In the first stage of industrialization, pollution in the environmental Kuznets curve world grow...
متن کاملReexamining the Empirical Evidence for an Environmental Kuznets Curve
This paper uses an updated and revised panel data set on ambient air pollution in cities worldwide to examine the robustness of the evidence for the existence of an inverted-U-shaped relationship between national income and pollution. We test the sensitivity of the pollution-income relationship to functional forms, to additional covariates, and to changes in the nations, cities, and years sampl...
